"There are many more questions," Michigan Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Janet Foran said. "We need to understand what went wrong in terms of train service and customer service, including poor communication with passengers."Amtrak attributed the service breakdown to "multiple failures." In a four-page letter, Amtrak Central Division General Superintendent Daryl K. Pesce wrote:
"A series of events, some foreseen, some not, resulted in an extremely unfortunate situation for our customers. Unforeseen events do not excuse Amtrak from having appropriate procedures in place to mitigate such occurrences.The actions taken in this case were clearly inadequate and further review is underway to take corrective steps."
