LIRR Branch May Lose Weekend Service
Weekend service on the Long Island Rail Road's West Hempstead branch could be eliminated as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's doomsday budget plan. In addition, weekend service on the Port Washington branch could be halved from twice an hour to hourly. The unpleasant news was revealed in a report on the LIRR budget in the Tri-State Transportation Campaign's online newsletter, Mobilizing the Region. In addition, the plan calls for delays in the platform gap mitigation program and maintenance expenditure cuts, including eliminating almost all bridge painting funds, less money for tree trimming around railroad tracks and cancellation of plans to overhaul bathrooms and seating in M-3 EMU coaches.
